WHAT IS GUEST SERVICE ALL ABOUT? WHAT IS A GUEST? A guest is the most important person in our venue. A guest is the purpose of our work – not an interruption. A guest is doing us a favour, not vice-versa. A guest may make contact in person, by phone or letter. A guest is not dependent on us – we are dependent on them. A guest is the person who is always right, even when they are wrong! The guest will form an opinion of us and our organisation at the same time. This means that your approach will affect the guest’s overall view of our venue. TYPES OF GUESTS Thinking about different guest groups helps us to develop our overall guest service. We can think of groups with different and differing sets of expectations. An easy way of doing this is to categorise the types of guests. Winners – guests who roar about the great service they receive Sleepers – guests who are loyal, but they do not yet tell everyone about you Drivers – guests who are independent – they use you but could easily go elsewhere Shoppers – guests who are out there constantly looking around and you only get one chance to get them Civilians – the mass of potential guests who are out there Whiners – these are your mistakes, which mean guests, at any stage, can slip away Comedians – these are the worst guests of all. They are people who shout and laugh at poor service 3 INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL GUESTS Most people think the word ‘guest’ refers to those people that walk into an establishment and purchase goods or services. They would be partially correct, but it would not be the full picture. The word ‘guest’ has a very broad meaning and includes a variety of different people who are all associated with the running of the business. Guests can be split into two categories, internal and external, and as an employee of our venue, you will be expected to give first class guest service to both types of guest. External guests: people included in this group are those people outside of the organisational structure. They are very important, as they will be looking in from the outside. They will build up perceptions of the company and make judgments solely on how they were treated. Examples of these types of guests are: Suppliers – companies who provide goods and materials to us. They themselves will not want to be associated with a company that has a bad reputation. They will build up their own expectations of our company based on what they see and experience.
